何朝宗生活在明代嘉靖、万历间。自幼受环境熏陶，喜爱瓷塑工艺，拜当地艺人为师。早年为宫庙泥塑各种神仙佛像，如德化碧象岩的观音、下尾宫的大使、程田寺的善才、东岳庙的小鬼，形象逼真。这些泥塑有的保留至清末和民国时代。他的瓷塑作品，吸收泥塑、木雕和石刻造像的各种技法，结合瓷土特性，博取各家之长，形成独具一格的“何派”艺术。
