此瓶青花呈色靛蓝，绚丽浓艳，采用名贵钴料苏麻离青烧制而成，清晰而通透，线条的纹理中或青料凝聚处有乌黑而浓重的结晶斑，为当时御窑厂所制精作。玉壶春瓶由宋人诗句中“玉壶先春”一词而得名，始见于宋代而一直延烧至今。元青花瓷器最初烧造多应波斯地区穆斯林王公贵族之需，造型、纹饰、功用皆依自彼地之风俗而定，往往器型巨硕，布局繁密。瓷器胎质较为坚硬，胎重而厚，含有较多杂质，胎面上有黑褐色铁点。这件元青花花卉菱角玉壶春瓶风华绝代，分外难得。
