宣德炉的设计和制作体现了明代工艺的高水平，其基本形制包括敞口、方唇或圆唇，颈矮而细，扁鼓腹，三钝锥形实足或分裆空足，口沿上置桥形耳或了形耳或兽形耳。除了铜之外，宣德炉还加入了金、银等贵重材料，使得炉质特别细腻，呈暗紫色或黑褐色。一般炉料要经四炼，而宣德炉要经十二炼，因此炉质会更加纯细，如婴儿肤。
