1954年在褔州仓山区发掘南朝的墓葬群中发现用寿山石雕刻的石猪。距今已有一千五百余年。历经唐宋朝雕刻艺术渐渐成形，但作品仍以人物及动物石俑为主。现褔州市博物馆藏有以上这些雕刻作品。元明朝开始与起用叶腊石制印，寿山石成为印石材料的一个重要品种，同时寿山石的雕刻艺术也随着产生并逐步发展。直至清朝初年杨玉璇、周彬等雕刻名家出现，促使东门、西门两个流派逐渐形成。
