范曾，字十翼，别署抱冲斋主，是江苏南通人，中国当代著名的学者、思想家、国学大师、书画巨匠、文学家、诗人。《钟馗神威》是范曾以钟馗为题材创作的一幅画作。钟馗在中国传统文化中是驱除邪佞的神祇，常被描绘为相貌奇异但正气浩然的人物。范曾在这幅作品中，没有沿用传统上钟馗“刳目而啖之”的可怖形象，而是着重表现其“内圣外王”的人文内涵，使钟馗成为有血有肉、有爱有憎的人物，既端庄威严又可敬可亲。
