中国的佛教绘画从宋元后逐渐分成了两派，一是工匠画，主要以职业绘画匠人为主，他们或是为寺庙绘制壁画，或是水陆卷轴画贩卖，基本组成都是一些文化程度比较低的农民或手工业者。他们的绘画技能主要靠师徒相传的方式学习，致使越到后来，造型能力越弱，只能靠在画面增加繁缛的纹饰以博更多的佣金。另一派是文人画家，以明末的丁云鹏为代表。文人画重视逸笔草草，不求形似，故佛像绘画成为他们抒发胸臆的方式，但造型愈发简化与变形，与宗教的距离越来越远。这种情况，致使明清以来佛教艺术愈发衰微。
