宗喀巴本名罗桑扎巴（善慧称吉祥），这是受沙弥戒时的名称。青海湟中县人，元顺帝至正十七年（公元1357年10月25日），生于宗喀的一个佛教家庭，父亲名叫达尔喀且鲁崩格（达鲁花赤daruqaci蒙古语“长官、长”之意，鲁崩格），母亲名叫馨茂阿却，两个人都是很虔诚的佛教徒。宗喀巴卒于明代永乐十七年（公元1419年）10月25日，享年63岁。因藏语称湟中（今塔尔寺所在地一带）为“宗喀”，故被尊称为宗喀巴。
