LOT 471 QI KUN (1894-1944), Scholar's Study on a Mountain Stream, China, Hanging scroll, 99,8 x 32,7 cm, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: "After the rain the mountain stream roars, when clouds open, the mountains show deep colors." Three seals of the artist: "Jimen Qi Kun", "Xijing jushi", "My home is in the west of the copper well" (jia zai tongjing zhi xi). Qi Kun, sobriquet Jingxi jushi, was a renowned landscape painter in Peking. He was a student of Jiang Yingsheng (1847-1919) and is said to have copied all the important paintings of the Song and Yuan periods. His style belongs to the so called Northern or zhe School characterized by atmospheric effects and calligraphic, 'ax cut', lines designing the rocks and mountains. Fine coloring and a refined brush add to the quality of his works. He was a member of the Hushe painting society and also a good seal carver. - Property from a German private collection, acquired before 1987
