LOT 500 ATTRIBUTED TO KAIHÔ YÛSHÔ (Japan 1533 - 1615), a painting of Laotse riding towards the West, ink on paper, faded seal: Kaiho ? - Yusho was born in the second year of the Tenbun era (1533) as the 5th son of a Samurai serving the Asai clan in Omi Province (present Shiga prefecture). After the death of his father, who died during a battle, Yushô entered a Zen buddhist monastery at Tofuku-Ji Temple in Kyoto at the age of two. In parallel with Zen practice, he studied the Kano style painting most probably under Kanô Motonobu, whose influence is shown within his paintings. In 1573, Yusho left the monastery and returned as a Samurai trying to resuscitate the Kaiho family. Later, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the sovereign in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, acclaimed Yusho's talent for painting so that Yusho decided to make a living as a painter.
