2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze balsamarium in the form of the bust of a youth on a square pedestal; youth with draped garment, left arm holding a small object, right arm tied in a sling; youthful face with almond-shaped eyes and luxurious hair, side burns to the cheeks; to the top of the head a circular mouth with hinged lid completing the hair, suspension loops to either side with foliate handle. 470 grams, 17cm (6 3/4"). From an important English collection; formerly with Gorny & Mosch, 16 June 2016, lot 87; ex A P Sammlung, Germany, acquired in the 1990s; accompanied by copies of the relevant Gorny & Mosch catalogue pages.
