11th-12th century AD. A hand-and-a-half iron sword with sturdy two-edged blade; the pommel (Oakeshott's Type P) crescentic with lateral spurs to the upper face, flared tang; slender guard flat at the blade but round-section towards the ends; broad blade with shallow fuller extending the whole length, rounded tip. See Oakeshott, E. Records of the Medieval Sword, Woodbridge, 1991 for discussion. 840 grams, 85cm (33 1/2"). From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s. Accompanied by a positive metallurgic analytical report, written by Metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford. Fine condition, edges notched.
