11th century AD. A bronze stirrup mount of Williams's Type 3 Group 3 with openwork trapezoidal plaque, central facing bear's mask, narrow flange to the reverse with ferrous rivets in place. Cf. Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, York, 1997, p.92. 24 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). From an old North Country collection; formed between 1970-2000. Fine condition.
