A BURMESE WOOD SCULPTURE OF A STANDING MANDALAY BUDDHA, C. 19TH CENTURY TO FIRST HALF OF 20TH CENTURYWood with gilding and insertsBurma, c. 19th century to the first half of the 20th centuryThis work impressively reflects the splendor of Mandalay during its cultural peak, when the kinds resided there. Buddha Gautama is standing barefoot on a round, narrow lotus base that is painted red. The royal garments feature gorgeously decorated hems. Buddha is holding the garment with one hand and a myrobalan fruit in the other as an allusion to the healing power of Buddhist teachings. The ushnisha is strikingly prominent and – typically of the Mandalay style – does not show a lotus bud as a finial. Relief decorations and many colorful inserts in the thayo and hmanzi shwecha techniques. The sculpture is gilded throughout, also on the reverse. Mounted on a dark, square wooden base.
