Middle Kingdom, 1938-1758 BC. A bronze discoid mirror with one polished face, bone handle formed as a papyrus stalk with incised collar and leaf detailing; mounted on a custom-made stand. For a similar-shaped wooden handle, cf. W.M.F Petrie, Objects of Daily Use, Egypt, 1927, pl. XXVI, no. 12; and for the mirror shape, pl. XXV, fig. 9-10. 302 grams, 24.5cm (9 1/2"). Formerly in a private American collection, kept in Europe since the 1960s, imported to into the UK in 2003; formerly with Pierre Bergé & Associés, Archéologie, Paris, 1 June 2012, Lot 39 (7,000-8,000 euros); accompanied by copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé catalogue pages. Fine condition.
