1st-2nd century AD. A bronze fragment from an appliqué comprising a facing female mask (Minerva?) with soft facial features, small mouth and nose, fleshy cheeks, the abundant hair covering the ears; a portion of wreath to the brow and braided band beneath the chin; the eyes hollowed to accept silver inlay; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 295 for type. 229 grams, 11cm with stand (4 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; from his father's collection formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Fine condition.
