1st-2nd century AD. A carnelian intaglio of a standing siren(?) in profile; set into a later hollow-formed gold finger ring with D-section hoop and broad bezel. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 202 for type. 7.65 grams, 28.03mm overall, 21.78mm internal diameter (approximate size British W 1/2, USA 11 1/4, Europe 25.66, Japan 24) (1"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
