1st-2nd century AD. A bronze oil lamp with basal ring, rounded bowl, short nozzle, discus with incised concentric rings, loop handle to the rear with reflector formed as a vine leaf with facing bust of the satyr Silenus, bearded with silvered detailing to the eyes and stub horns. Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 377 for bust of Silenus. 277 grams, 15.5cm (6"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. Very fine condition.
