A bronze crossbow brooch comprising three grape-shaped hexagonal-section knops each with beaded collar, hexagonal-section crossbar with loops to the upper face, deep trapezoidal-section bow with beaded lower edge, rectangular footplate with lateral chamfers, catch to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Iron Age and Roman Brooches, Oxford, 1985, item 502. 60 grams, 80mm (3 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquire 2013 from an old Essex collection. Fine condition.
