Description
Translation provided by Youdao
6th-7th century AD. A silver oval bowl with flat rim, rounded body and base. For a similar example see the Metropolitan Museum accession number 49.112.1. Akbarzadeh, D. et al. Two Recently Discovered Inscribed Sasanian Silver Bowls Bulletin of the Asia Institute, New Series, Vol. 15 (2001"). 379 grams, 22.5cm (9"). Property of a North London lady; gifted from her father's collection; formerly with a Mayfair gallery, London, UK; previously acquired in the 1980s. Elliptical bowls in silver are a recognisable artefact type for the Sassanians which have no known antecedents in the Graeco-Roman world nor in Western Asia. They appear towards the end of the period, in the 6th century onwards. The form of the vessel has been associated with the custom of drinking wine and the boat-shaped profile may be a reference to the important wine trade of the time. Very fine condition.
