Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st millennium BC. A ceramic rhyton drinking vessel with flared conical body, bull-head finial with forelegs folded beneath. 400 grams, 15cm (6"). Property of a North London gentleman; formerly with a Mayfair gallery in the 1980s. The rhyton was one of a number of distinctive forms of vessel found in the ancient Near East and Greece from the Bronze Age through to the Roman period. They are more commonly associated with the Persian empire where they achieved a variety of animal shapes and were often fashioned in precious metals. The word rhyton means 'pourer' and they were an essential part of tableware in the Near East, as well as Greece, where they were used to pour wine into bowls or directly into the mouth. Fine condition.
