Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals of various shapes and designs, including seven accompanied by typed and signed notes by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-236) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 20 x 30mm. This has a roughly round flat face, while the back rises to a stalk handle with oval pierced loop on top. The design, which is done in raised lines, consists of three similar motifs spread around the edge: each consisting of a near half-circle with line branching off from it. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. The loop is cracked, and the rim is worn down, but the piece is generally in fair condition.'; (T-2) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22.5 x 22 x 33mm. This has a flat round face and the back rises to a tall handle with loop for carrying on the top. The design on the face, which is linear, consists of a simple cross and crescents filling each quarter so created. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1700 B.C. The loop is a little bent, and there is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. The metal underneath is in good condition.'; (2033) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 17.5 x 18.5 x 31mm, Handle: 26 wide mm. This is a roughly round stamp seal, with the back rising to a stalk, where there are three ridges before the stalk breaks out into two birds' necks with heads. The necks are grooved and the eyes are applied. A hole where the neck meet contains still a bronze loop for suspension. The seal shows a standing horned animal with tree in front of it, a bird above its back, and an unidentified item behind it. This is a Luristan bronze, c. 1000-700 B.C. It is an interesting piece for the design and for the shape, and is in good condition for such metal.'; (V-816) 'Stamp Seal of bronze, 27 x 26 x 16mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is compartmented, shows a formeé cross with dot in circle in the middle. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 b.C. It is worn at the outer edges, and has some incrustation on the surface, but generally it is in fair condition.'; (U-470) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 23 x 20 x 34mm. This has an oval, originally flat face, and back which rises steeply to a stalk handle surmounted by a pierced oval loop. The design, done in raised lines, consists of a small central motif and four curving lines starting from the edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. The outer rim is worn off the face and the surface is generally pitted, but the condition generally is fair.'; (V-805) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 21.5 x 29mm. This has a flat, roughly square face, and a back which rises like a pyramid to a ridge, above which is a stalk handle with suspension lop. The design on the face, done in raised lines, consists of two identical motifs tête bêche: a curling line based on the edge with two almost parallel supports. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. The rim around the face is worn down, especially at one corner, otherwise the piece is in fair condition.'; (V-802) 'Stamp Seal of bronze, 19 x 19.5 x 22mm. this has a very roughly round face and back which rises steeply to a stalk handle with suspension loop. The design on the face, in raised lines, consist of four curling strokes based on the rim, the longest with additional strut, a short stroke based on the edge, and another in the middle. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. The rim and loop are worn somewhat, and there is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but generally the piece is in good condition.' 165 grams total, 22-34mm (1-1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-2, U-236, 2033, U-470, U-228, U-300, V-805, U-507, V-816, V-802, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
