5th-6th century AD. An iron javelin head with slender triangular head and flared shoulders, long neck with baluster detailing, flared socket with attachment holes; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. similar example from Basel-Kleinhüningen in Menghin, W. Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, p.212. 1.2 kg, spearhead: 37.5cm (14 3/4"). From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s. Fine condition. Professionally cleaned and restored.
