3rd millennium BC. A finely polished axe in a grey-green basalt with straight cutting edge tapering to rounded butt; drilled to receive handle. Cf. MacGregor, Arthur (editor), Antiquities From Europe and the Near East in the Collection of The Lord McAlpine of West Green, Oxford, 1987, no.4.166. 583 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). From the London collection of Aleksey Vinokurov, formed from the 1920s-1951; collection number 33, acquired in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1950; accompanied by a copy of the collection inventory dated 1951. Fine condition; repaired.
