A gilt-bronze Class Ai button brooch comprising thick rim and chamfered border surrounding a stylised male face with helmet, pellet eyes above bulbous cheeks and elliptical mouth; attachment points for a pin-lug and catchplate to reverse. See Avent, R. & Evison, V.I. Anglo-Saxon Button Brooches in Archaeologia, vol.CVII, 1982. 3.40 grams, 16.07mm (3/4"). Formerly in an important Mayfair collection, acquired 1991; neat inked label with acquisition no. 91.228 to the reverse. Button brooches of Class Ai are generally of fine workmanship with a carefully-modelled face. Very fine condition.
