A banded agate rectangular bead with rounded edges, with a neoclassical image of a winged sphinx attacking a bearded man lying nude with right arm raised wielding a sword; two parallel piercings to the short edges. Cf. British Museum, accession number 1933.10-15.1 for a gem with a similar scene, also available through the Classical Art Research Centre online database. 25 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). Formerly the property of a North London gentleman; formerly from an old collection, property of a London resident. Fine condition.
