20th century AD. A gold cross pendant with slightly tapering facetted arms, granulation to the end of three arms, integral suspension loop above; to the centre a carnelian intaglio, engraved with an image of St George on horseback, holding a long spear. 11.8 grams, 45mm (1 3/4"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. St George was a soldier of Greek and Palestinian origins and a member of Diocletian's Praetorian Guard. He was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith and decapitated before Nicomedia's city wall on April 23rd, 303 AD. He is one of the most venerated saints in Christianity and immortalised in the legend of St George and the Dragon. Very fine condition.
