Rev: seated Britannia with incuse BRITANNIA legend and date; the coin split, hollowed out and formed into a patch box with screw thread join. See S. 3776 for coin. 41.31 grams. Georgian gentlemen dandies often wore black 'beauty' spots or 'patches' on their faces, together with other cosmetics, in the 18th century; small boxes such as this example would hold spare patches in case of need while out socialising.
