Dated 1827 AD. Made on a George III, 1797 cartwheel penny, pierced for suspension. Obv: smoothed and engraved WH / to / MH in three lines within rectangular cartouche with fronds above, flowers at sides and date below. Rev: smoothed and engraved WHEN / THIS YOU SE / REMEMBER / MEE WHEN I / AM FAR A / WAY in six lines. See Field and Millett, Convict Love Tokens, 1998, p.82 for the same wording. 24.64 grams. It is likely that this love token is connected with a prisoner who was transported to Australia as the sentiment engraved includes the words 'WHEN I AM FAR AWAY' upon the reverse; There are a number of prisoners with the initials 'W H' recorded as being transported to Tasmania or New South Wales on several ships sailing from England during 1827 (see such websites as https://convictrecords.com.au/) and further research might discover more information. []Very fine; engraving clear.
