KRISHNA VISITING HIS BELOVED Malwa, West Central India, 18th century Opaque pigments on paper, the vertical composition portraying in the foreground the blue-skinned avatara of Vishnu, Krishna, standing in front of an attendant requesting to meet his beloved, the attendant showing him the entrance in a welcoming gesture, the beloved seated on the floor in the palace in front of typical oval cushions, both female characters heavily bejewelled and sumptuously clad, the traditional architecture enriched with vibrant colours, set within white and bright red borders, the verso with eight lines of black Devanagari script, mounted on a white cardboard frame, 20cm x 16.5cm and 32cm x 24.25cm including the mount.
