Ming Dynasty, mid 16th century AD. A wooden temple votive figure with much original lacquer, with two recesses in the reverse, one containing a paper prayer; in the second (at the back of the head) various small offerings including a bronze bell (now about the neck of the figure"). 618 grams, 29cm (11 1/2"). From the Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, formed since 1985; acquired Mellors and Kirk, 3-4 March 2011, lot 334 [part]; previously in the Richard Cotterell collection; acquired by Cotterell in 1997 from Antiquarius Antiques, Kings Road, Chelsea, London, SW3; with old typed Cotterell collection label to base.
