Description

Late 3rd millennium BC-1st millennium AD. A mixed group of ten bronze seals and artefacts with various shapes and designs including eight accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-268) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 19 x 18 x 1mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented face, and flat back on which is mounted a big circular loop. The design is a kind of rosette with four petals around a central circle containing a dot. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The ends of the petal are a little damaged, but generally the piece is in good condition.'; (Y-267) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 14 x 13.5 x 20mm. This has a round flat face and convex back, on which is mounted a stalk handle ending in a big pierced loop. The design on the face, done in raised lines, consists of a simple cross within an outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. There is a little incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but generally it is in good condition.'; (R-760) 'Bronze Button, 20 x 20 x 11mm. This has a round, decorated face, and the back is flat with a rim hammered up around it and with a loop handle mounted on it. The face shows in deep modelled relief a standing bird with wings raised holding a bunch of grapes in the beak. Two spirals and two dots are fillers. This is reported to have come from west central Asia, which is no doubt correct, and it is a piece of distinction, though dating is difficult since there has been no serious study of such pieces. A date c. 700-1400 A.D. may be correct, but it may be older. It is in good condition, and traces of guilding can be seen on the surface. It was no doubt on a garment of an important person.'; 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 15.5 x 10mm. This has the shape of what is depicted, with flat compartmented face and flat back on which is mounted a loop handle of strip metal with grooves. The design shows some kind of crawling insect with a dot in each of the three compartments. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c.2200-1800 B.C. There is corrosion on the surface, but the metal appears to be in good condition underneath.';(T-478) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 24 x 21mm. This has the shape of a trefoil with curving arms. The face is flat with hollowed out design. The back is also flat, with tall stalk handle mounted in the middle, surmounted by a pierced loop. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is covered mostly with incrustation, which could be removed, and is in good condition.'; (U-322) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 14 x 14 x 13mm. This has a round, flat, compartmented face, roughly vertical sides and a slightly convex back on which an oval-profile handle rises, no broken. The design consists of two crescents placed opposite each other. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is worn, and the handle is incomplete, but what remains is in good condition.'; (V-722) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 16 x 12mm. This is no doubt fashioned as a depiction of something, perhaps a camel's hoof. The face is flat and compartmented, the back slightly convex, and in the centre is a stalk handle ending in a suspension loop. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is an interesting object for its shape, and a rare type. There is some incrustation on the surface, and it is a little worn at one side, but the condition is quite fair.' 64 grams total, 15-24mm (1/2-1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-479, T-513, R-760, U-267, U-268, V-722, U-467, T-757, T-694, U-322, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
