A papier mâché lidded box with lacquered surface and painted polychrome panels; the lid with courtly scene in which a couple kneel on cushions within a house, the female offering drink to the male with standing male and female attendant onlookers; sidewall with two scenes of a mother and baby and two of men sharing food and drink while seated in long grass; band of 12th-13th century poetry inscription to the rim of the lid. 384 grams, 22cm (8 3/4"). Property of a London collector, acquired early 1990s.
