10th century AD. A solid bronze tongue-shaped strap end executed in openwork in the form of a plant-scroll within a frame; attachment plate pierced to accept rivets. See Thomas, G. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age Strap-ends 750-1100, Finds Research Group Datasheet 33, Sleaford, 2008. 20.62 grams, 53mm (2"). From an old English collection; acquired on the UK art market. The inspiration for the decoration is the Late Saxon Winchester Style which is found in manuscript art, carved bone items, metalwork and elsewhere. This type is Thomas's Class E Type 1 Winchester Style.
