Irish, 7th-8th century AD. A gilt-bronze cruciform mount with parallel-sided body, central disc panel and mushroom-shaped arms; the central panel with La Tène style trumpet-whirl, the arms and body with interlaced tendrils, pierced for attachment. Cf. Hammond, B. British Artefacts vol.2 - Middle Saxon & Viking, Witham, 2010, items 1.6-b, d, g, v for type. 10.38 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Found Kettlestone, Norfolk, UK, 2018. The style of the cross is Hiberno-Saxon, showing the influence which the Irish church exerted over English art in the later 7th and 8th century AD, due in large part to the missionary work which Irish churchmen undertook in England and on the Continent. Chip-carving and strong gilding are typical of this art which also uses regular interlace and beast-head finials to decorative effect.
