宋徽宗在《大观茶论》中称：“盏色贵青黑，玉毫条达者为上。”其中提到的“盏色贵青黑”应指此种乌金釉盏。因乌金釉底色深黑纯净，便于观察汤色，故宋徽宗斗茶以乌金釉盏为珍。本品即是一例，其制式呈香炉形，口缘较宽，束颈，造型圆润端庄。胎体坚密，呈玄铁色，素有“铁胎”之称。内外壁皆施黑釉，釉色乌润如漆，釉层越厚则黑色越为浓郁，当为茶艺上品。
