Her forte was classical music, and she composed all her ghazals herself, mostly based on a raga in the Indian Classical tradition. Her endeavours include a wide range of singing styles such as dadra, thumri, khayal and ragas. There are over 400 recorded ghazals to her credit, and several live performances. She was also a regular performer at All India Radio.Mehdi Hassan was one of the most influential and path breaking ghazal singers in the Indian subcontinent. Born in Jodhpur, British India; he migrated to Pakistan along with his family. He came from a family of musicians and was extensively trained in Dhrupad style, which is considered one of the most demanding and rigorous forms of music. His haunting voice, decided non-departure from raga based singing and unique adherence to rhythm have etched his name in musical history for many many years to come. Lata Mangeshkar famously quoted – “It feels like God is singing through him”.Ghazals have been popular in the Indian subcontinent ever since.Globally, vinyl records have been seeing a steady rise in sales since 2015.
