Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including eight accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: R-707) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 52 x 51 x 20 mm. This is round with scalloped edge, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of angular profile, pierced for suspension. The design on the face is compartmented and consists of a roestte: a small central circle with eight lines moving off towards the outer rim, but dividing into V-shapes before the rim is reached. In two opposite spaces so left oval shapes fill the areas. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, but generally it is in very good condition.'; R-450) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 53 x 57 x 22 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a central Greek cross joined to the outer band by curving struts from each outer corner, and by one further curving strut from the middle of each arm. The spaces left by these struts were filled with two crescents joined to the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is now lacking three of the eight crescents, and the outer band is dented and a little damaged, however generally the piece is well preserved, and the metal is in good condition.'; R-517) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 52 x 51 x 22 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which a large handle of inverted V-shape is mounted. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a rosette, with inner circle, band around that, and ten 'petals' from this circle, giving the shape of the piece. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal beneath appears to be in good condition, as is the piece generally.'; R-522) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 50 x 49 x 14 mm. This is round, with a scalloped outer band. The face is flat, as is the back, on which a handle of inverted U-shape is mounted. The design is open-work and compartmented. It consists of a wheel-like pattern with eight 'spokes' joining the centre to the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation, which could be removed, and the piece is a little bent, but generally it is in good condition.'; T-460) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 52 x 51 x 19 mm. This is round with scalloped outer edge, The face is flat, as it the back on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work. Consists of a simple cross within an outer band, the arms of the cross being consolidated by V-shaped struts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is incrustation, which could be removed. There is a little denting of the outer rim, but the metal appears to be in good condition.'; Q-3) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 44 x 43 x 15 mm. This is round disc with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a central Greek cross on the end of each arm of which rests a crescent joining an outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is surface incrustation, which could be removed, but the metal appears to be in good condition, and the object generally is well preserved.'; V-856) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 51 x 16 mm. This is round with zig-zag outer edge, flat face and flat back in the centre of which is a loop handle on inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a quadrate cross within an outer band which has loops on its inner side, and the zig-zag on its outer side. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal appears to be in good condition.'; V-783) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 43 x 42 x 16 mm. This is round, with flat, compartmented and openwork structure, with handle of inverted V-shape on the back. The design is a linear pattern: a simple cross has a square around its middle, and each corner of this square is joined to outer rim by a strut. Two looping lines then fill the space beyond each side of the square. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is incrustation, which could be removed, and one side is slightly dented, but generally it is in good condition.' 362 grams total, 40.6-57mm (1 1/2 - 2 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
