Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five seals comprising: one discoid with openwork design of a coiled snake, details incised to the reverse; and four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-181) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 48.5 x 50 x 12mm. This is round, with flat face, flat back, and has a handle of inverted U-shape mounted on the back. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a straight band dividing the area into two halves, and in each half, tête bêche, are three motifs starting from the centre, like pillars with tops that bend over. The whole is put within a plain outer band. The design is repeated with engraved hatching on the back. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design and piece is generally in good condition.'; (U-17) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 38 x 38 x 12mm. This bears the shape of the object depicted, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of sheet metal with thickened edges. The design, which is compartmented, shows a standing quadruped with big snout and long tail handing down the back. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The upper part is bent back and is a little damaged, but generally this is in good condition and is a rare type. The metal is sound.'; (U-8) Stamp Seal of Bronze, 30 x 56 x 13mm. This has the shape of what is depicted, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of sheet metal with thickened edges, The design, which is compartmented, shows some kind of animal, but it is not easy to say exactly which animal. The depiction is long with perhaps a blunt snout at the front and short tail at the back. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is an extremely rare design and the piece is in quite good condition.'; (C-2) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze,48 x 48 x 16mm. This is round, compartmented but with solid back and a loop handle on the back with flat top. The outer edge is notched. The design divides the face into four quarters with lines crossing in the middle, and the opposite quarters amtch. Two are filled with two V-shapes. The other two are decorated with three crescents each: one in the centre, two at the outer corners. This is a seal from west central Asia, c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is an attractive design and the metal is in very good condition.' 163 grams total, 41-49mm (1 1/2-2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers U-8, U-17, T-181, C-2, T-661, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
