据刘海戏金蟾民间传说中，常德城内丝瓜井里有金蟾，经常在夜里从井口吐出一道白光，直冲云霄，有道之人乘此白光可升入仙。刘海为人孝顺，后与狐狸幻化的女子胡秀英结婚。婚后胡秀英欲济刘海登天，口吐一粒白珠，给刘海做饵子，垂钓于丝瓜井中。 此木雕摆件，俨然取材于着一场景，刘海披发至肩。身穿长袍，敞襟。面颊圆润，柳叶细眉，双目望向金蟾。鼻边两须卷曲，嘴角略带笑意。双手紧握锁链，金蟾死咬宝珠不放。此件清代早期刘海戏蟾摆件，取材有趣，工艺考究，当为良作。
