炉式出自宣德炉谱，源于青铜彝器中的簋，口略侈、束颈、鼓腹、高圈足，腹两侧有龙首耳，龙首狰狞生动。颈部双龙戏珠，腹部一面锦地上苍龙教子，苍龙须发飘扬，怒目而视，威武矫健，虬龙回首顾盼，饶有趣意，另又作天象、龙凤纹，首尾相接，形态古拙，有飞扬流动之感。器身色泽沉古，施鎏金，可见凝重华丽。圈足亦作云间瑞兽，围绕火珠盘旋飞腾。双耳下有垂珥，与器身铆接而成一体。底有六字篆书款“云间胡文明制”。红木盖盒开光透雕云纹，盖钮鹿纹雕镂玲珑剔透，与沉稳炉体相承，轻灵雅致，相映成辉。胡文明，明朝江苏云间人（今松江县），据《云间杂志》中记载其按古式制彝鼎尊卣之属极精，价甚高。不过其手艺素来私藏，曾经发誓绝不传授给外人，是属家族事业。胡文明的炉作大抵采用镂花、雕花的手法来装饰，甚或加以鎏金，雕工细腻，繁复灿烂。
