A carved domed garnet tortoise shell-shaped cup, with segmented outer face and two lines of calligraphic text: 'Praise be to God for Ali the son of Mohammed'; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 8.87 grams, 32mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Hampstead gentleman; from his family collection formed since the 1970s. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'An exceptional job of garnet carving.'
