Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-2nd century AD. A round military horse phalera with domed central element of a winged Victory (Greek Nike) embossed and frontally depicted, a wing still visible on the right side of the phalera, the goddess wearing a tunic with the right shoulder uncovered (exomis), a bracelet worn on the upper part of the arm, long snake-locked hair falling on the shoulders; prominent nose and lips. See Appels, A., Laycock, S., Roman Buckles and Military Fittings, Witham, 2007, p.82, figs. AA9.2, AA9.3 and AA9.4. 104 grams, 17cm (6 3/4"). Property of a European gentleman living in the UK; formerly in a private collection formed in the 1990s. This kind of harness decoration was usually positioned on the horse's breast area, affixed to the chest straps of the bridle (antilina"). Phalerae of the 1st and 2nd century AD are more unusual than the later 2nd to early 3rd century types, which were associated with baldrics or sword belts (Appels & Laycock, 2007, 82"). They often feature the heads of gods, goddesses, or mythological female creatures such as Gorgon or Medusa, usually with attachment holes. [No Reserve]
