CHARLES HAYTER (BRITISH 1761-1835) Portrait miniature of a Gentleman, circa 1801 wearing a dark blue coat with black collar and gold buttons, white waistcoat and tied cravat Watercolor on ivory Gold frame, the reverse glazed to reveal locks of hair tied with seed pearls in elaborate design on opalescent glass Oval, 76mm (3in) high Exhibited: Comerford Collection at the Irish Architectural Archives, Dublin, 2009 Literature: The Comerford Collection: Portrait Miniatures, (privately published, Dublin, 2009) pp11, 56 (#244) Charles Hayter taught perspective (on which he was an authority) to Princess Charlotte, King George IV's daughter, to whom he was later appointed Professor in Perspective and Drawing. He also dedicated to her his book An Introduction to Perspective, Adapted to the Capacities of Youth in a Series of Pleasing and Familiar Dialogues, first published in 1813 in London. An album containing 443 studies for miniature portraits is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Hayter noted inside the cover that these were sketches he 'placed behind the ivory, which being transparent, gave the artist the aid to make the outline on the ivory'.
