A George III silver candle snuffers and stand, the snuffers possibly by John Buckett, London 1771, the stand by Emick Romer (standard and maker's marks only), the box and scissors snuffers with cast open scroll foliate handles, 16.5cm (6 1/2in) long, the rectangular stand with a husk-and-leaf capped bifurcated handle, the gallery pierced with bars and with swags and patera, a wood base beneath, 17.5cm (6 7/8in) long, each engraved with a crest, the stand also with RL to AP 1772 The date and town marks possibly disappeared in the piercing of the stand. The family crest for POWIS or POWYS. Blazon: An arm erect proper, holding in the hand a fleur-de-lis argent. The association with AL and AP is unsure, although the POWYS name could be involved for AP. Sir Thomas Powys (1649-1719) married Anne Littleton daughter of Adam Littleton, Baronet. The name Littleton has been ever since associated with this line of the Powys family. The crest was most commonly used in the 18th century and later by the Powys family, who were derived from Northumberland.
