Johann Heinrich Tischbein d.Ä., 1722 Heina – 1789 Kassel, Werkstattwiederholung
PICTURE OF JULIUS JÜRGEN VON WITTORF
Oil on canvas.
146 x 106 cm.
Browned paper sticker with three-line ink inscription on the upper stretcher, corresponding to the description on the reverse side of the canvas.
The sitter was, as the old inscription overleaf indicates, a knight and chancellor in princely Hessian-Cassell service. Depicted in a three-quarter portrait to the left, the gaze directed towards the viewer. The right hand holds an ebony stick with an ivory knob, the left hand is placed on a console. Above the turquoise-green skirt a red silk cape with a white fur collar. Over the chest red scissor and on the coat repeated star of the Order of the Golden Lion. On the upper right the coat of arms of the sitter, on the left the inscription "Julius Jürgen von Wittorff/ Gebohren den 14ten Oktober/ 1714", on the verso on the canvas in old oil paint ten-line description "Julius Jürgen von Wittdorff/ Gebohren den 14ten Octobr 1714/ In die fürstl. Hessen-Castellischen dienste getretten/ 1728/ p.t. Knight and Candsler of the Goltenen Loewen/ Ortens, wurcklicher Minister, Ober-camerherr/ and Ober-Stallmeister. 1776 / Paid by J. H. Tischbein, op. cit.: 1776 / The original is found in the family. This explains why the painting is a work of another hand. (1210261) (11)
