Bonheur du jour
Height: 93 cm.
Width: 43.5 cm.
Depth: 38 cm.
Stamped several times "P. Denizot".
Paris, epoch Louis XVI, around 1780.
body in oak with veneer in kingwood, rosewood, maple, satiné, boxwood, partly stained. The fittings in bronze, cast, chased and gilded. Lining in black maroquin leather, gold embossed. In bronze sabots standing, edged, tapered legs, supporting the cubic body. The body is framed by legs decorated with pseudo-canals. Between them four wide drawers, the upper one being flatter and optically separated by a false crossbeam. Inside, a leather-covered writing board can be set up, which can be pulled out telescopically to the front. The rear part of the table top is fitted with an attachment with a lockable shutter closure and an open compartment behind it. The furniture is designed for free placement in the room, is veneered on all sides and is characterised by its varied design and complex geometric parquetry. Especially the strong colour contrast of the different precious woods makes this furniture particularly eye-catching. Front and table surfaces with patterns of star-shaped lozenges and acanthus leaves in meandering frames. Side surfaces covered with lattices of mitre veneered frames with flowered squares above. The back with ribbon-framed squares with filling laid on cross joints. Frame surfaces with woven band ornamentation of intertwined, counter-rotating wave bands, partly filled with whirl rosette. Restrained bronze ornamentation in the standard repertoire, such as the block sabots and decorative band at the upper leg end, or the bronze collar around the table top and top. The rear edge of the top is additionally decorated with an à jour gallery of geometric patterns of rhombuses and ovals. Circular fittings with pull rings as laurel wreaths.
Note 1:
Pierre Denizot (1715-1782) became master in 1740 and probably left his father's workshop at this time. Works of his hand sold into the collections of the Comte de Provence and the Duc d'Angoulême, among others. His estate, which was sold after his death in 1782, indicates a considerable prosperity.
Note 2:
The Bonheur de jour (luck of the day) type usually refers to a delicate piece of occasional furniture whose function and location could be variable. (1221559) (13)
