The chiaroscuro painting style of Caravaggism is unmistakable in this painting. At the same time, the painting conveys a thoughtfulness in that the young girl's serious gaze appears in the mirror she is holding up, as a kind of spiritual dialogue. The girl in the half-portrait is shown to the right, with a slight back view. On the right at the table a fine Italian ointment bottle, a comb, hairpin and a blue ribbon, which symbolically also refers to the unmarried state of the girl. The Neapolitan painting style is expressed in the subdued brown and red colours of the clothing, but also in the toned reproduction of the incarnate parts. The psychological aspect of the representation is probably the most important quality criterion of the painting. We know something similar from Jusepe de Ribera (1588/91-1652), with his painting "Mary Magdalene", where the girlishly portrayed saint is similarly portrayed in a dialogue with a skull she is looking at. The chiaroscuro style typical of Caravaggism is obvious in the painting on offer for sale in this lot. The psychological aspect of the depiction is probably the greatest distinction of its quality. A similar concept is known from paintings by Jusepe de Ribera (1588/91-1652), for example his Mary Magdalene, where he depicts the saint as a young girl in dialogue with a skull.
