Flämischer Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts
THE BETHLEHEMITICAL KILLER
Oil on wood.
38.5 x 50 cm.
In decorative frame.
At the gates of the city women with their children trying to save their children from the attacks of the soldiers. In the centre a splendid grey horse in rear view, on it a soldier in armour with helmet, who has just snatched her child from a woman kneeling on the ground. On the right, leaning against a stone pedestal, a blond woman, in tears, her two dead children lying in front of her. On the left-hand side of the picture, two other women are trying to defend themselves against a helmeted soldier and a man in red robes. Drastic depiction, in which the women are mostly dressed in white or light blue long robes, while the men wear uniforms or red garments. High quality painting with strong light-dark contrast. Wood panel slightly arched. (12209212) (2) (18)
