Mathias Calzetti Withoos, 1627 Amersfoort – 1703 Hoorn
VIEW OF A LANDSCAPE WITH ROMAN RUINS AND HUNTING
SOCIETY Oil on canvas. Doubled.
60 x 73 cm.
Signed on stone at lower left "M. Withoos".
In gilded frame with leaf decoration.
View from slightly elevated position to a fantastic arcade whose stone columns end in a round-arched truss of branches and twigs. Below running two monks in grey robes in conversation. In the left half of the picture there is a stone relief and a pedestal on which the sculpture of a naked woman sits. Behind it are the remains of another dilapidated building, in which, through a doorway, a kneeling and praying monk can be seen. The right side of the picture opens the view into a wide mountainous landscape with a green meadow, where hunters are hunting. In the foreground another stone relief, on which one of two men in a red robe with sword is sitting. Both are looking with interest at the sculpture of the naked lady. Fantastic composition in predominantly beige-brown colouring with many interesting details. Rest. (12221137) (18)
