BIBLE SCENE FROM THE BOOK ESTER
Oil on wood.
59,8 x 71,1 cm.
Signed "Haestar" at lower right.
According to the statement of B.J.A. Renckens created around 1650.
Shown here is the banquet scene, with the youthful Queen Ester, new wife of the Persian King Ahasveros, inviting to a meal to which the slanderous adversary and royal minister Haman was also invited. As Ester reveals the rebellious plans of the minister at the table, the latter, as in this picture, already kneels and asks for leniency and mercy. The scene is shown in a courtly room with velum draperies, with other persons at the laid table, servants and the king himself, standing in turban and in red clothing with sceptre on the left side of the picture. In an original way, a court jester on the right is already bringing the rope on which, according to legend, Haman is also hanged.
